Kodaikanal

Often complimented as the “Princess of Hill Stations”, KodaiKanal or Kodai sits high on the southern peak of the Palani hills, around 2100 meters above the sea  level. It is very popular among tourists for its tranquil panoramic beauty. The life and blood of the local economy is predominantly inclusive tourism and hospitality industry in general. Munnar

Yet another world-class hill station at Kerala, Munnar mesmerizes tourists with its picturesque-ness beyond comparison. Nilgiri Hills

An exotic assemblage of mountains comprising of at least 24 peaks crossing the 2000 meters mark, Niligiri or Blue Mountain is located in the western corner of Tamil Nadu coinciding with the intersecting edges of Karnataka and Kerala. The location of Nilgiri hills also marks the meeting point of the Western Ghats with the Eastern ghats. Its location and terrain features render it a very important biosphere.

While the Noyar river demarcates these exotic hills from the Karnataka plateau in the North, Palghat gap separates it from the famous Anaimalai hills and Palni hills in the south. The district of Nilgiri in TamilNadu is situated nestled in these blue lofty mountains only.

The popular tea from Niligiri is cultivated in the tea estates swathed on these hills. The location of the hills at 130 km latitude and 185 km longitude is ideal for high quality crop of tea consistently.

Interestingly, the entire stretch of 6000 km square area of Nilgiri hills, the Western Ghats and the Mukurthi National Park along the south-eastern border of Nilgiri may be selected as a World Heritage Site, the same being under consideration by UNESCO.

Ooty

Nestled in the lofty Nilgiri Hills is a very pleasant hill station called Udhagamandalam, better known as Ooty. Such is the beauty of the place that it is often complimented as the “Queen of hill stations” by the tourists at large. Fittingly, the hill station is the capital of the picturesque Nilgiri district. The high hills at Ooty stand tall in the range of 2280 to 2290 meters, the highest of them all being Doddabetta with 2623 meters altitude. The city Coimbatore is about 105 km away from the hill station.

Coonoor

Some 19 kms apart from the popular hill station Ooty sits another pretty tourism haven called Coonoor. It is the second largest peak in the Nilgiri ranges and sports an impressive height of 1,858 meters above the sea level.

One of the triplet hill stations in the Nilgiri ranges, besides Ooty and Kotagiri, Coonoor is a lovely small town with stretches of tea gardens complimented with grassy meadows with a wild cover of bright sunflowers, marigolds and Rhododendrons. To add on, the weather of the town remains enjoyably fresh round the year.

Coonoor is located on the eastern side of the southern most outline of Doddabetta peak and comes first of the trio when Southern plains conclude. Geographically marked as Upper and Lower Coonoor, the town once used to be inhabited by the Coon hill tribe.

Mudumalai

A noted wild life sanctuary of India, Mudumalai is one of the many feathers in the cap of Niligiri range. The thick forest cover of Northern Niligirs, though situated in Tamil Nadu, is a constituent of the Niligiri Biosphere reserve. The Mudumalai shares its mountain ranges with another noteworthy sanctuary called Bandipur. However, the meandering Moyar River flowing by it and the haughty Nilgiri peaks in the neighborhood lend a niche edge to Mudumalai over Bandipur, which allows the verdant and dense woods to be home to a wider and rarer variety of flora, fauna and avifauna, including a good population of elephants and gaurs.

Red Hills

Widely considered as a delicate natural region in the picturesquely famous Niligiri Biosphere reserve, the Red hills are anyone’s fantasy of vast stretches of verdant thick forest cover with refreshing breeze and captivating scenery.
